The problem with art supply packaging

The art supply industry often relies on excessive plastic packaging, contributing to environmental waste. Traditional paintbrushes, for example, typically come in non-recyclable plastic.

As a designer, I saw an opportunity to merge my passions for creativity and sustainability into a single project. My goal was to create a paintbrush packaging solution that not only reduces waste but also adds whimsy.

Our solution: packaging that doubles as an activity

Instead of plastic, the brushes come in a three-fold recycled-paper brochure, where each section serves a distinct purpose. The first fold securely holds the paintbrush, the back provides instructions, and the third section features an empty line drawing infused with water-activated pigments.

Just tear off the drawing, paint it with the brush and water, and reveal a collectible bookmark!

Researching paper and materials

To bring this concept to life, I conducted material research on recyclable and renewable options suitable for both packaging and brush components. The final product would use recycled paper, natural fiber brush hairs, and a sustainably sourced bamboo or wooden handle.

Before landing on a final design, I developed multiple prototypes. I experimented with bookmark size, brush placement, and fold structure. Through testing and feedback, I refined the holding mechanism for the brush, the branding and themes of the packaging, and the overall user experience.

Final photoshoot and consumer testing

To validate the design, I conducted a studio photoshoot with a model interacting with the bookmarks. She easily tore the packaging, enjoyed the city-inspired bookmark designs, and had no issues painting the bookmark. This confirmed the product’s intuitive and engaging experience, reinforcing its usability and appeal. It also allowed me to take clear photos of the process, demonstrating how the product works.

Future possibilities

Looking ahead, this project has the potential to expand and create waste-free packaging for other art supplies. There is also room for continued exploration of alternative eco-friendly materials to push the boundaries of sustainable product design. One possibility is designing bamboo brushes handles with replaceable brush tip heads, to reduce material waste.

This project is an ongoing exploration of how creativity and environmental consciousness can come together to create positive change.
